Divertimento

Divertimenti (yes, that’s the plural of “divertimento”) start to appear in the latter part of the 18th century and are typically fairly light pieces for smallish instrumental ensembles. They seem to have been intended for light entertainment and don’t need to be taken too seriously; however, classical musical people take things pretty seriously most of the time, so maybe we miss the point of 18th-century entertaiment—which included such things as reading books and going to the theatre (if one had the means)—in our scatterbrained, over-saturated 21st-century world where so many things compete for our entertainment. Like your cellphone. And your social media stuff. You know the routine. Doomscroll and so on.

This piece is just light entertainment, and I chiefly wanted to create a more or less homophonic texture that contains nuance in dynamic and articulation. Such nuance is not super-typical in electronic music, and certainly not in most music from modular synthesizers. But it can be. You just have to prioritize and pay attention.
